Trout Fishing-Spring 2015

Where did the year go? Spring trout fishing is not far away. Seems like the years go faster the older I get, but you all have heard that before. So where do we go, for trout fishing in the spring is the question on the other end of the phone. Sometimes that doesn’t get an answer until we are on the road and that’s subject to change.

Been going on March 1st for many years. Buddy of mine started getting me interested in the Potholes below O’Sullivan Dam years ago. MarDon Resort

We would venture to N. Hampton Lake early in the morning to catch a limit of trout (they changed opening date for N. Hampton to April 1st) , hell some times we would not go to bed and be on the water at midnight. On one of those occasions we found out they had killed off all the fish the previous fall and all the fish ended up being small stocked fish. With technology now we don’t have that problem as much, it pays to do a little research ahead of time and check the regs Washington Department of Fish & Wildlife for dates ect.. With the change in opening dates we have turned to the north of Interstate 90 into the Quincy Wildlife Area.

Most of the lakes in the area produce some great trout fishing. If you want to get away from the crowd you can do that here if you take a little walk from one of the parking lots. You have over 15000-acres to explore and do some fishing at many small lakes. Have a boat, they have launch’s at a few lakes that will handle large boats, may want to check the weather before you drag a boat all the way with you, we have had to leave the boat on the trailer because of ice covered water.

Speaking of ice, it can be just a little cold this time of the year so i suggest to take plenty of warm clothing. A couple years ago was it, I have a tendency to forget exactly what last year was like, if I haven’t written it down, anyway we almost always walk a half mile from the parking lot just to stay away from any crowds there may be. This one year it was just a bit cool, 17 degrees, when we pulled in to the parking lot, so we all take off to find our spot on the lake. After a few hours we have our limit of trout and head for the rig. By now the temperature has raised to a balmy 24 degrees, didn’t have to worry about ice, our trout where pretty much froze solid by the time we made it back to the rig.

So far the weather is making me believe there will not be much ice, I said much, we still have a month to go before the opener. We could get an Arctic Blast and freeze the lakes over and then where to go? Oh yes we will go not if the weather permits, we will just throw a few more layers on and out the door we will go(old saying not bad weather just bad clothing).

Yes six of the fishing party have been talking about this years opening day of trout fishing already!

Still not set in stone where we will be going, I’m sure it will be a lake with Rainbow Trout, and in the Quincy Lakes Unit (Quincy Lake – Fish Washington | Washington Department of Fish & Wildlife ). There are great opportunities for the young ones & those that may need accommodations in this area.
